Introduction to Hair and Skin Science with Dr. Cara (Cheng-Lin) Ting MED0001665654

PRF Hair treatments in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth & Adelaide

Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) hair loss treatments can be considered the second generation of the highly regarded platelet rich plasma (PRP) treatments. It uses similar principles to treat the similar conditions but it may be considered to be more effective.

PRF treatments use extracts of your own blood to help promote the production of cells to help tackle hair loss and other hair loss-related conditions. As it uses your own blood, there is a lower risk of negative outcomes. The treatment is also moderately fast, with minimal pain and requires minimal recovery time.

PRF hair loss treatment can be effective for helping women and men experiencing:

Genetic hair loss

Androgenetic alopecia

Stress-related hair loss

Female hair loss and thinning

Male hair loss and thinning

Hormonal related hair loss

Menopause related hair loss

Age related hair loss

Alopecia related hair loss

PRF Hair Treatment for Women

It is a misconception that only men experience hair loss. Around 40% of women experience hair thinning or loss by age 50. Women can experience genetic hair loss, hormonal hair loss and stress-related hair loss. PRF can be an effective treatment for female hair loss and thinning.

The earlier you seek treatment, the more effective it can be. Appointments last between 45 minutes to an hour, are relatively painless, require no surgery or invasive procedures and minimal recovery time.

PRF is a 100% autologous biomaterial, it can accelerate wound healing and tissue regeneration, can increase stimulation of osteogenesis and new blood vessel formation. PRF can contain a much greater concentration of platelets than normal blood, therefore, PRF may have great healing and regenerative properties.

PRF Hair Treatment for Men

PRF hair treatments can tackle the majority of conditions experienced by men. That includes male pattern baldness, stress-related hair loss, hair thinning and chronic conditions that result in hair loss.

PRF is considered the second generation to PRP. With PRF there is no anticoagulant in the tube that the blood is collected, the plasma actually forms a platelet and white blood cell-rich fibrin scaffold once injected into the treatment area. The fibrin clot can allow for a much slower and longer release of the growth factors and cytokines – in other words, PRF treatment can continue to release more growth factors over time, even after your treatment is completed.

The treatment is fast, with minimal pain and requires no recovery time. It’s also non-invasive, non-surgical and requires no pharmaceuticals!

Your PRF Hair Loss Treatment Appointment

Appointments should last between 45-60 minutes and will leave no sign. They are easy to fit into a busy schedule, including dinner hour!

How does all this work in practice? What does a PRF hair loss treatment look and feel like?

  • PRF tubes & tube holder/cooler are stored in a fridge at 4 degrees.
  • We withdraw a small amount of blood, using equipment specifically designed for PRF treatments.
  • The PRF tube is then placed into a tube holder and cooler for 60 seconds. By cooling the blood, this can result in 20-50% more PRF liquid to be used to reintroduced into the areas where there is thinning or hair loss concerns.
  • We immediately place that blood into a centrifuge designed for PRF treatments to separate the different elements of blood. The PRF tubes are spun at an exact 700rpm for 5 minutes.
  • PRF is then carefully injected into the areas of concerns where there is hair loss and thinning. These fine injections are in conjunction with micro-needling the scalp where there is hair loss and thinning.
  • We also provide optional LLLT therapy for 10 minutes which can increase blood flow to scalp, increase nutrient delivered to hair follicles, reduce the chances of inflammation and help promote healing.

Once complete, there is no signs of treatment being performed and you can go about your day like normal, however, do not exercise or shower for at least 4 hours.

It’s rare to experience discomfort or experience inflammation. If this happens, please contact us immediately on 0472 647 011.

PRF Hair Loss Treatment at Hair and Skin Science

PRF Treatments at Doctor-Led Hair Loss Clinics in Australia

PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin) hair loss treatment is a non-surgical procedure that uses your body’s own growth factors with the aim of supporting hair follicle health. Hair and Skin Science offers PRF hair treatments across 16 clinics in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.

All treatments are performed by registered nurses and supported by Australian-registered doctors. A consultation is the first step in determining whether PRF is appropriate for your individual situation.

PRF treatment may use a higher concentration of growth factors and platelets compared to standard PRP, delivered within a fibrin matrix that may allow for a more sustained release over time. As with all hair loss treatments, individual responses vary. PRF does not contain anticoagulants or pharmaceutical additives, and because it is derived from your own blood, the risk of allergic reaction to the material is considered low.

At Hair and Skin Science, all PRF treatments are performed by registered nurses and supported by a team of Australian-registered doctors, with experience in hair loss assessment and treatment. All practitioners are registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), and registration details are available on request. Your treating practitioner will discuss the procedure and what outcomes may realistically be achievable for your individual situation before proceeding.

PRF treatment uses a centrifuge process to concentrate the fibrin matrix from your own blood. This matrix is understood to contain growth factors that may support hair follicle health. Unlike PRP, PRF does not contain anticoagulants, which allows the fibrin to form a natural scaffold that may release growth factors over a longer period following injection. Individual outcomes depend on a range of clinical and biological factors.

Every patient’s hair loss pattern and underlying causes are different. Our medical & health team may conduct a scalp and hair health analysis to develop a treatment plan appropriate to your individual situation. Whether you are experiencing early-stage thinning or more established hair loss, we work with you to set realistic expectations and discuss what may or may not be achievable with PRF treatment.

Our clinics are located across Australia’s major cities including Melbourne, Sydney, and Perth. The PRF procedure typically takes around 30-45 minutes. Comfort management options, including numbing agents where appropriate, are discussed at your appointment. Most patients are able to return to regular daily activities the same day, though we recommend avoiding exercise and showering for at least four hours following treatment. Individual recovery experiences vary.

Hair and Skin Science has provided hair loss treatments to patients across Australia for a number of years, with clinics in every major city. Our approach is built around clinical oversight, transparent pricing, and honest conversations about what treatment can and cannot achieve for each individual patient. From your first consultation through to follow-up care, our team is available to support you and answer your questions throughout the process.

Frequently Asked Questions

This can depend on your overall health and genetics, but on average, patients can begin noticing a positive response from PRF between 2-3 months after treatment.
Everyone is different and will have a different experience with PRF treatments, but on average, you should see less hair loss and a decrease in thinning first and then hair growth after.
PRF treatments can be considered the second generation to PRP where platelets and WBC form a fibrin matrix (scaffold) that can localise growth factors and can have a much greater concentration. PRF has been a popular treatment in the US for potentially treating hair loss and skin rejuvenation. We are proud to be one of the first clinics in Australia to introduce PRF to help treat women and men experiencing hair loss or thinning.
The duration of results from PRF treatment varies between individuals and depends on factors including the cause and extent of hair loss, overall health, stress levels, and genetic factors. On average, results may be observed for between 9 and 12 months, though this cannot be guaranteed. Your treating practitioner will discuss realistic expectations at your consultation.
The number of PRF treatments is individual, however, as a general rule, we tend to recommend a series of 6 PRF treatments spaced 3 weeks apart.
Once that initial treatment is complete, we sometimes recommend a top up treatment every 6-9 months to help maintain results.
As with any injectable procedure, PRF treatments carry potential side effects. Most patients experience mild and temporary effects such as redness, tenderness, or sensitivity at the injection sites. There is also a small risk of infection or inflammation of the scalp. This list is not exhaustive and the risks relevant to your situation will depend on your individual health and scalp condition. Your treating practitioner will discuss potential side effects before the procedure. If you experience significant discomfort, swelling, or signs of infection following treatment, please contact us immediately
We recommend that patients verify the qualifications of any provider before proceeding with an injectable treatment. At Hair and Skin Science, all PRF treatments are performed by registered nurses and supported by Australian Doctors. All practitioners are registered with AHPRA. We also recommend confirming that treatment protocols have been developed with input from a qualified medical doctor.
